I feel like my last three months of blog entries were a sort of tribute to the glory of Seattle summers, but Fall in the PNW ain’t too shabby, either.  The trees are bursting with color and have shed just enough leaves to coat the ground with a nice crinkly carpet of gold.  Swim season is over, but duck hunting season is well underway – we hop in the car and visit our feathered friends at the Arboretum whenever the sun comes out.
We spent a lazy Saturday there with the Chens, and after the longest short walk ever, as Juliette seemed to run twenty steps backward for every twenty-one steps forward, we staked out a spot near the water to crack open a bottle of wine and watch the sailboats.
Like I said, not too shabby.
My mom and dad were in town last weekend and we spent Friday afternoon at Kubota Gardens – we’d been there just one week earlier with Shane’s mom, but wowsers, it had gotten even better since then! Â Happy Birthday to me!
Such a treat to ring in my 34th year with this crew and these colors.
Saturday was rainy, rainy, rainy – we hardly left the house and were all feeling completely stir-crazy by Sunday morning. Â Thank goodness for a sun-break! Â Off to the arboretum again!
My mom and dad headed back to Oregon on Sunday afternoon while Shane, Jules, and I went for a jog along the trails at the Redmond Watershed Preserve. Â Juliette happily bumped along the wooded path with Shane, singing songs while I huffed and puffed to keep up.
We saw a couple of horses on the trails, and three days later, we’re still hearing about them. Â “Horsey go poo-poo on his bottom, mama!”
Thanks, October, for being awesome.

Shane’s mom left yesterday after a week-long visit – it was a full few days, packed with parks and sight-seeing and plenty of at-home Lego-building and choo-choo time.  We’re missing her today – Juliette’s first words when we came downstairs this morning were, “Where Grandma go?!”  I know, kiddo, it was awfully fun having her around…
Last Sunday was a beautiful Fall day, so we rented a boat at UW and paddled around Lake Washington.  It was a little windy out there, and the water was a little rougher than we anticipated, but after some frantic rowing on Shane’s part, we made our way to the calm, sheltered waters of the arboretum.
Juliette couldn’t resist leaning over to run her fingers through the water, but Grandma kept a firm hold on her life jacket to make sure the rest of her stayed dry.
This photo captures our crossing back to the dock so well – Juliette and I snapping pictures while the wind whipped our hair, Shane grimacing with each stroke of the paddle as he struggled to keep us on course.
Whew! Â Made it!
Shane went to work on Monday while the rest of us headed to the zoo for some animal-gazing.
We lucked out and saw most of the animals up-close, from giraffes to hippos to these magnificent tigers.
And penguins!!!
Juliette loved the flamingos and did her best to mimic their one-legged stance.
We said good-bye to our furry and feathered friends around noon and headed home for naptime – Juliette snoozed the afternoon away but woke up ready to get back at it, so we caught the last of the day’s rays at Jefferson Park.
Juliette went to daycare on Tuesday while Shane and his mom did some sight-seeing, and then stayed home with Grandma on Wednesday for some bonding time (which didn’t go quite as planned, stubborn Jules!).  Thursday was Grandma-Mama-Jules day, and the three of us spent the morning at the mall and the afternoon at Luther Burbank Park.
Shane biked over after work to meet up with us and have his own go at the playground.
The four of us were together on Friday and decided to spend the cool, gray morning indoors at the Museum of Flight. Â This kid looks ready to fly, doesn’t she?
We headed to Kubota Gardens in the afternoon and wandered down the tree-lined pathways, soaking in all the greens and reds and oranges.
Tuckered out. Â Finally.
We said good-bye to Pat yesterday morning, with lots of hugs and a few tears.  Thanks for making the trek out here, Grandma!  Thanks for riding along with us so patiently on the roller-coaster that is toddler-hood.  For loving Juliette so fiercely.  Come back soon.

The drive to Portland on Friday was uneventful – Juliette didn’t sleep at all, but she was content to sit in the back seat with her new Elmo book and her bag of dried mangos, so we’ll call it a win.  We settled into Mitch and Kathryn’s for the final leg of our vacation and the girls took up right where they left off, tearing through the house thick as thieves.  Once the kiddos were finally put to bed, the grown-ups sat around the table eating pizza, drinking wine, and talking late into the night about the joys and perils raising daughters.  It’s cool, feeling a deeper bond with my brother since we’ve both become parents.
We got a slow start on Saturday morning.  Let me rephrase that – I got a slow start on Saturday morning.  Juliette, Morgan, and Elise woke up roaring to go.
I suggested we all go out to Sauvie Island to some berry-picking.  Shane checked the forecast and said it might rain, but I shrugged off his warnings, optimistic that the skies would clear and we’d spend a couple of hours frolicking among the rows of bountiful blackberries.  Turns out I really should have trusted that weather report.
We did manage to pluck a couple of pounds of fruit, but called it a day once our jackets were thoroughly soaked and our shoes so caked in sticky mud that we could hardly lift our feet.
Thanks for being such good sports, kids!
It was nice to change into clean, dry clothes and settle down for naps.  Elise helped with storytime, calming Juliette down after a busy morning.
And then she got Jules riled up all over again!  I couldn’t bring myself to break it up, though – Elise is such a delightful goofball.
And Morgan! Â So sweet! Â Most of the time.
Once naptime was over and the rain clouds cleared, we shepherded the kids back outdoors.  Their energy is endless.
Throughout the day, Juliette and Morgan were either the very best of friends or were engaged in a fierce bout of tug-of-war over some toy or book. Â I think Morgan isn’t quite ready to relinquish her title as baby of the family, and for reasons I just can’t comprehend, Juliette seems to be used to always getting her way! Â Plus, there’s a whole lotta strong, strong will between the two of them.
But dang it, there’s also a whole lotta love.
Elise is all growed up – helpful and kind, but also playful and silly.
I asked the girls to pose for a final cousin photo before we took off.  SMILE, ladies!
Thanks, Mitch.
We got in the car one last time on Saturday evening and plowed on home to Seattle.  We pulled into our garage around 9:30 pm, just as Juliette’s eyelids were starting to get heavy.  We unpacked in a flurry and hit the hay hard, more thankful than ever for the comfort of our bed (and crib).  What. A. Trip!
Total miles logged in the car: Â 1,400
Miles logged in the car while Juliette was sleeping:  ~25 (not per our plan)
Miles logged in the car while Juliette was screaming: Â ~20 (not too shabby!)
Number of lakes and rivers visited: Â 6
Number of deer spotted: Â 13
Number of times Juliette looked out the car window and asked, “baby deer???”: Â 312
Number of times we talked about moving to Bend: Â 3
Number fond memories made: Â So, so many.

Deer sightings are common in my mom and dad’s neighborhood – we saw a doe with her three fawns our first day in La Pine and since then Juliette had been constantly asking “baby deer?  baby deer?  baby deeeeer?  where arrrrrrre youuuuuu?”.  On Wednesday my mom and I strapped Jules into the stroller and set out on a deer hunt.  Just as we were about to call it a bust and head back to the house, we spotted another doe with a couple of fawns.  The great outdoors for the win!
We passed the afternoon at Elk Lake, bobbing in the calm, cool water.
Shane couldn’t resist the paddle boards for rent at the dock and rowed over to pick up Jules.  I had my doubts about how this would go down – she isn’t one to sit still for more than about 15 seconds at a time.  But she was amazing, perching so perfectly on the front of the board for half an hour while she and her dad toured the lake.
I hopped on for a quick spin, a little nervous when I realized I didn’t have a dry change of clothes with me, but I managed a short (wobbly) trip to the buoy and back.
We ate dinner on the patio of the lodge while Juliette ran circles around our table – all that sitting still had her wired!
We spent Thursday morning hunting deer and jogging down the wide-open dirt roads. Â What a relief to not have to get after this girl to stay on the sidewalk and watch out for cars!
Juliette helped Grandpa with some watering, washed some rocks, scooped some dirt. Â This is the stuff of a toddler’s dreams…
Another day meant another lake – after naptime, we hauled my dad’s boat up to East Lake for a spin. Â We motored out to the middle of the lake and just let ourselves drift, as Juliette was eager to take the wheel.
Hey, Gilligan!
Juliette eventually let me sit in the driver’s seat and I put the pedal to the metal. Â I want a boat.
We spent the rest of the day just hanging out on the back porch – Juliette cozied up with her new best buddy, Bernie, then rummaged around in the tool shed and passed a good 20 minutes sweeping the sidewalk.  It felt so good to spend the bulk of our waking hours outdoors every day, enjoying the simplest of pleasures.
We loaded up our car on Friday morning and said good-bye to La Pine after one last stroll through the woods. Â I miss this place already.
Thanks so much, Mom and Dad, for a perfect week!
We made a stop at Mohawk Cafe in Crescent for a hearty breakfast before hitting the long dusty road to Portland. Â We’ll see you next summer, Central Oregon!

Shane and I have been talking for awhile now about a little getaway sans Juliette, and this trip to La Pine felt like the perfect time to slip away for a night – we’d been wanting to spend some time in nearby Bend and knew that Juliette would be in great hands with Grandma and Grandpa.  We booked a room at a great hotel, made reservations at a fancy restaurant, and on Monday afternoon, we were off!  I shed a few tears as we pulled out of my mom and dad’s driveway, feeling equal parts anxiety and sadness over leaving our girl.  What if Juliette slept horribly and kept my parents up all night?  What if she felt confused and abandoned?  What if she missed me even half as much as I was already missing her?  Agh!  My poor, sweet baby – why in the world had I been so eager to get away?!  Shane and I both felt very much on edge and spent the drive to Bend bickering in the car over a silly misunderstanding – this romantic getaway was off to a less-than-ideal start.
But when we sat down for lunch we looked each other in the eyes, laid our worries out on the table, and then resolved to appreciate the fact that we were FREEEEEE!  And it really felt so good.  We savored our uninterrupted meal at Spork, popped next door for fro-yo on a whim (when was the last time we did something on a whim?!), and then set out to find a sunny spot near the water to spread out a blanket and relax.  After being chased away by demon mosquitos at Lava Island Falls, we ended up at Todd Lake, 20 miles west on the Cascade Lakes Highway.  It was just the oasis we were seeking – scenic, quiet, just breezy enough to lay in the sun without overheating.  Shane waded in the water and built himself a make-shift rock stool while I laid on the grass and read my book.  Lord have mercy, it was glorious! Our life is rich with joy and fun these days, but it’s so short on stillness.  Those couple of hours by the lake were like taking a long, deep breath in the very freshest of air.
We checked into our hotel later that afternoon and grabbed a quick snooze before heading out for dinner.  First, though, a quick drink at the Crux brewery, which had been highly recommended by a friend.  We tasted a few of their ales, declared their Saison our favorite, and then set out to make our 7:30 reservation at Zydeco.  We ordered the whole shebang – cocktails, appetizers, meaty mains, and after-dinner drinks.  We sat at our table for over two hours and used the luxury of time to let our conversation meander from politics to family to plans for the future.  Long time, no see, huh hon?
We had big plans for sleeping in on Tuesday morning, but of course, I woke up at 6:15.  Still, it was pretty great to lay in bed and read for an hour, and then, as the ultimate kid-free indulgence, take a morning nap at 7:30 am!  We got rolling around 9:00 and headed to Sparrow for killer breakfast sandwiches out on the patio, grabbed a few things at the market, and then, by 10:30, we were itching to get back to La Pine and see Juliette.  The time away had been precious, but we missed that kid somethin’ fierce.
We had a happy reunion at my mom and dad’s house and got the rundown:  she had spent much of Monday afternoon crying “mama go?  mama go?  mama goooooooo?â€, but had eventually settled and had slept well, eaten well, and enjoyed a morning of playing in the dirt with Grandma.
We all spent the afternoon hanging out on an idyllic little stretch of river near McKay Falls. Â We waded and threw rocks and cracked open cold brews.
Together again!
And the best part? Â Schnell family vay-cay was only half over – four more days of mountains and water and family to go!
Posted by kellyschnell on July 26, 2015 at 1:18 pm under jules, pacific nw, shane, the fam. Comments Off on schnell family road trip, part two (a getaway).
It’s been three years since our last trip to my mom and dad’s house in Central Oregon – I blame the rugrat.  But Friday we piled into the car with our boatload of “essentials” (Pack n Play, booster seat, stroller, king-sized bag of dried mangos) and hit the road.  Things got off to a shaky start, as we hit traffic 15 miles south of Seattle and spent an hour crawling toward Tacoma.  We hit traffic again near Portland and were all at our wit’s end when we finally rolled up to Mitch and Kathryn’s house after nearly five hours of driving.
Thankfully, a couple of glasses of Mitch’s home-brewed beer and a couple of hours of watching the cousins happily run free in the yard, and all was well again.
We spent the night in Portland and took a morning stroll with the girls in their new neighborhood before undertaking the second leg of our journey.
But first, a quick stop at the farmer’s market to eat donuts and Pine State Biscuit sandwiches with the Chens, who happened to be in Portland for a weekend getaway. Â The kids ran circles in the lawn, shrieking with joy as Jack tossed them in the air. Â We were glad to see Jules getting her wiggles out, as we had another four hours in the car ahead of us.
This is the third or fourth time we’ve hung out with Jack and La Verne at this particular farmer’s market, and it seems that it just keeps getting better and better…
Shane and I sighed anxiously as we said good-bye to the Chens and strapped Juliette into her carseat – she had refused to nap in the car the day before and had spent the last hour of the journey wailing “mama’s lap!  mama’s lap!”  We braced ourselves for another tension-filled few hours.  But…she was great!  She read to herself for awhile, sang songs, slept a bit.  Crisis averted!
We arrived at my mom and dad’s house in La Pine mid-afternoon and quickly got settled – Juliette reacquainted herself with Grandma and Grandpa, ran in the sprinklers, ate watermelon on the back porch.  We took an evening walk and all crashed a little early that night, ready to fully slip into vacation mode.
Shane went on a monster bike ride on Sunday morning while the rest of us went into Sunriver for coffee and some playground time. Â We all spent the afternoon at North Twin Lake, wading in the water and eating a picnic dinner on the sandy shore.
My mom and I slipped away for a walk around the lake and as we strolled along the forested trail, I was reminded that I am very much a mountains person – I love the roar of the ocean, but I’ll take the rustle of pine needles blowing in the wind any day.
We were up and at ’em early on Monday and drove over to La Pine State Park to splash in the water and get some sun.  Juliette made a bee-line for the river, soaking her shoes and dress while ignoring my futile shouts of “wait!!!”
I think she might be a mountains person, too?
On Monday afternoon Shane and I left Juliette with Grandma and Grandpa and set off on our own little kid-free adventure. Â Stay tuned.

We boarded a plane bound for the great midwest a week ago and after the longest-ever four-hour flight, we landed in Minnesota for a happy reunion with the Schnell clan.  It was 10 pm when we rolled up to Shane’s parents’ house, so we tucked in a tuckered-out girl, did a little catchup with the family, and then fell into bed ourselves, exhausted but relieved to have made it through the journey with only minimal tears (alright, in truth, Jules cried a lot…but I only cried a little!).
After a Friday morning run into town to pick up a few essentials, we spent some time meeting the next door neighbors and Shane’s mom and dad’s new house.
We went for a walk down the dirt road at the end of their driveway and Jules found a mud puddle she couldn’t resist. Â I didn’t have any napkins or wipes on me, so Shane showed her how to wipe her hands on the grass.
She thought this was a pretty great trick.
Shane’s sister and nephew came by later that afternoon – Avery warmed up to his uncle the moment Shane offered to toss the football around with him.
Shane’s dad thought Jules would love checking out his tractor, so we all walked down the road to his shop that evening.
She was a little skeptical when we first put her in there…
But then Denny fired that thing up and let her hold the steering wheel – she loves being in the drivers seat.
She looked on a little enviously when it was Avery’s turn to take it for a spin.
Our nieces and brother-in-law joined us that evening – felt so good to have the whole gang together!
Shanay and Hayden were incredibly sweet to Juliette, doting on her, hugging her and reading to her and letting her play with their phones – this girl was in cousin heaven.
We feasted on burgers and steaks hot off the grill for dinner and crashed hard that night, still a little weary from the previous day’s travel.
On Saturday morning we headed over to Hayden’s school to watch her softball tournament. Â It was drizzly and a bit chilly that morning, but Juliette was happy to hang out in the rain and cheer on her cousin. Â Getting to sit in the dugout was a major bonus.
Shane and I left Juliette with Grandma and Grandpa that evening so that we could grab a drink with his sister and brother-in-law. Â We did some quality catching up at Sixth Ave Wine and Ale and arrived back at the house just as the skies opened up and the rain started to POUR.
And POUR. Â I thought this was just a typical midwestern thunderstorm, until I heard the guys talking about a tornado watch – a funnel cloud had been spotted a half mile away. Â Shane’s mom started pulling out blankets and pillows and piling them in their utility room, in case we needed to take refuge. Â Jules looks awfully nervous, doesn’t she?
We made it through the storm unscathed, but wowsers! Â What a night!
We spent Sunday morning at church, celebrating Shanay’s confirmation – she was radiant. Â She’s become such a mature, beautiful, kind young woman.
Juliette sat through the service quietly and contentedly, happy to hop from my lap to Aunt Tiff’s to Grandma’s to Grandpa’s.
We ate lunch at the church and then took advantage of the sunshine to romp outdoors before naptime.
Juliette loved the freedom of the wide open spaces – we spend a lot of time outside in Seattle, but this may have been her first opportunity to dance in the middle of the street.
And those horses! Â She couldn’t get enough.
Shane’s mom and I spent the afternoon rearranging furniture in the living room – it was fun for me to help them settle into their new place (they moved in just a few hours before we arrived on Thursday!).  The skies turned gray and we weathered another storm, but it passed quickly.  Those colors, though!  Gorgeous.
We had an appointment for a family photo shoot at 6:00, but first, the obligatory stop at Big Ole, the town’s pride and joy (see Jules down there, by his foot?).
We went back to the house after our photo session for pizza and ice cream – I came to love those big family dinners, gathering around the kitchen island while eating and drinking. Â Our dining room table has felt especially quiet these past couple days!
Monday was cold – temps had been in the 70’s on Sunday, but had dropped to the 30’s overnight.  We did a little shopping with Shane’s mom that morning and then I told Juliette we’d make good on our promise to take her to a lake to throw rocks.  We hopped out of the car at lake L’Homme Dieu, felt the biting wind and saw the whitecaps on the water and then called it.  We tried.
We spent the evening at Tiff’s house – Juliette was quite taken with Pinto Bean, their rambunctious shih tzu.
Cousins!
We let Juliette stay up past her bedtime to eat watermelon with Grandma and Grandpa. Â My heart was fit to burst, watching these two love our daughter so openly and generously throughout our stay.
And then one last story…
We said our good-byes early Tuesday morning and hit the road to Minneapolis.  The flight back to Seattle was smooth and completely tear-free, so we have lifted Juliette’s previously-imposed travel ban.  It felt good to walk through our front door Tuesday afternoon and settle back into home, but man, those Schnells.  They’re a fun, incredibly kind bunch.  I miss them.

Since our last visit to Portland at Christmas, Elise has turned 7, Morgan has traded in her training wheels for a big-girl bike, and Jules has officially left baby-hood behind and become a full-fledged toddler. Time flies. Thankfully, no matter how much has changed, it seems these kids pick up right where they last left off. When we rolled into town on Friday afternoon, it took all of three minutes for the girls to start playing and laughing and carrying on together.
I was a little skeptical on Friday evening as to whether or not all three of them would still fit in the bathtub together, but Elise and Morgan were willing to fold up their legs and give it a try! Jules was thrilled.
We got a slow start on Saturday morning, letting the girls run around the house until Juliette started doing her “outside?” chant.
We headed down the street to the neighborhood playground, where I watched Juliette go down the slide that Morgan and Elise have traversed hundreds of times. I’ve been snapping photos from this very same spot for years now!
The playground has apparently lost its charm with the big kids, though – they’ve moved on to new adventures.
After getting our wiggles out, Shane, Jules and I drove over to the Pearl District for an REI run and a stop at Barista for a perfect latte.
And then we popped over to Portsmouth Park to watch Elise play soccer. That girl’s got hustle. And wow, she looks old here, huh?
When Morgan and Juliette tired of sitting on the sidelines, they kept each other company on the playground.
We napped for awhile in the afternoon and then soaked up some rays in the backyard before heading out once again, for a picnic dinner at Cathedral Park under the St. Johns bridge.
We ate chicken wings and blew dandelion puffs and bubbles and ran races and stretched out on the grass in the late evening sun. I’m so thankful for family. And 70-degree weather!
After waiting for nearly an hour for a train to pass and let us out of the parking lot (patience is a virtue, patience is a virtue, patience is a virtue), we jetted home to get the kids to bed, crack open a bottle of port, and do some distraction-free catching up with Mitch and Kathryn.
We found ourselves at the neighborhood playground again on Sunday morning, so that the girls could ride their bikes. Or so that the boys could ride their bikes?
We packed up our things and set out for the beach later that morning. First, though, I wanted to snap a photo of the Jarrell clan in front of their house – they’re moving to the other side of Portland later this month, and while I’m super-excited for them to settle into their sweet new digs, I’ll miss this place! We have a lot of memories here.
No time for nostalgia, though, when you’ve got kids rearing to get to the beach. Onward!
As per usual, the sand and water seemed to imbue Juliette with an extra dose of already-plentiful energy. The running!
We said our goodbyes around lunchtime with hugs all around. Morgan got an extra-long embrace from Jules – those two had been thick as thieves all weekend.
No more of this more-than-4-months-between-visits business – see you in July, Jarrells!

Remember this post?  Remember how January was all coughing and sore throats and runny noses?  Remember how thankful I was for the dawn of a new, healthy month?  Scratch that.  I’m afraid Chez Schnell is still sick central.  Shane has felt like he’s had his head in a fishbowl for the last four weeks, with a head cold he can’t quite shake.  I’ve had three colds myself, one case of pinkeye, and am currently ailing from a wheezy, rattling cough that makes me sound like I need to lay off the smokes.  Juliette continues to leave a lovely trail of snot in her wake, like some kind of two-legged (all be it adorable) slug.
And yesterday, just as I resolved that March would be our month to kick all these viruses to the curb, Juliette came down with a brand new fever. Â We put her to bed early and then I hit the sack at 8:00, praying that the cough suppressant that the Urgent Care doctor had prescribed would allow me to get a decent night’s sleep. Â I woke to the sound of Juliette wailing around 9:00, and after Shane’s unsuccessful attempt to soothe her, I got up to give it a go. Â Halfway to her room, I started feeling woozy and spent the next ten minutes hunched over the toilet while my poor, feverish girl screamed from the next room. Â Add stomach bug my list of woes.
On that note, I’m so glad we got 2015’s low point out of the way this early in the year!  I have to believe things will look up from here – I didn’t puke at all today, and Juliette’s fever seems to have passed, so rather than wallowing among our discarded Kleenex, I’m cautiously optimistic that we’re on the upswing.  And, I’m so thankful my mom has been here the past few days to help us through this.  Though I would have loved for her visit to have occurred under better circumstances, it was so nice to have her here to nurse us toward health with homemade bone broth and an extra hand with Jules.
And before we hit our wall on Sunday night, we did manage a fun little outing to Seward Park to go for a stroll and throw rocks.
I’m going to play the fool and say it again: Â cheers to the dawn of a bright and shining new month.
We set out for Portland on Christmas Eve, our trunk loaded with presents and wine and assorted goodies.  Juliette napped about half the way and then patiently chilled in the backseat for the last eighty miles – dare I hope that we’re making a road-tripper out of this kid?
We rolled up to Mitch’s house around 4:00, kicked off our shoes, and poured ourselves a couple of home-brewed beers from his kegerator.  Let the festivities begin!  It took Juliette about five minutes to warm up to her cousins, and then she was off to the races, following them from room to room, screeching with joy when they turned to chase her.  She settled down in her pack n play without a peep after dinner – a couple of hours of keeping up with the big kids had plumb tuckered her out.
We were up and at ’em early the next morning – the girls were thrilled to see that Santa had indeed stopped by in the night to fill stockings and leave a few extra gifts under the tree.
The adults sipped coffee and politely exchanged a few presents while the kids delightfully tore into their loot – Juliette quickly got the hang of unwrapping and made quick work of lining up her new books and puzzles.
Morgan and Jules were thick as thieves during our visit, hardly leaving each other’s sides.  Whenever Juliette fussed a bit, resisting a diaper change or reaching for something she couldn’t have, Morgan would come extra-close to her, murmuring “hiiiiii Juliette, it’s okaaayyy…” while gently touching her cheek.  It only had about a 25% success rate of doing any actual soothing, but damn, it was sweet.
Once we’d opened all the presents and eaten our bacon and coffee cake, we set out for Mt. Tabor park to let the kids burn off any left over Christmas morning antsies.
We made it home just in time for naps and then spent a quiet afternoon at the house, reading and doing puzzles and drinking hot chocolate.
I took Juliette out for a short walk around the neighborhood after she woke up…
And we found Santa! Â Hey, if the kid doesn’t know any different, no sense in standing in that line at Nordstrom for two hours!
We headed in when the sun started to set and Elise offered to keep Juliette entertained while the finishing touches were put on dinner.
We shared a big Christmas meal and then all three girls piled into the tub for bathtime.  They streaked through the house when they were done, laughing hysterically as they left their towels in a pile on the floor and clamored upstairs to find their pajamas.  The sight of Juliette running behind Morgan and Elise with such glee, her dimpled bottom jiggling as she shouted and giggled – what a gift.
Friday was another day, another park – we spent the morning at Columbia Park, teeter-tottering and swinging and sliding.
Shane and Juliette took marathon naps in the afternoon while I played Disney Frozen Bingo and Frozen Memory and Frozen Matching with the girls. Â Elise got a microscope for Christmas and we spent a little while “doing experiments”. Â That face! Â She’s so grown up these days, but such a wonderful goofball at the same time.
We went out for dinner at a local brewpub and then everyone grabbed a few last snuggles with Juliette before it was time for us to hit the road back to Seattle.
I’m telling you, the 7:30 pm departure is money – Juliette fell asleep a few miles into the ride, we made record time in the absence of any traffic, and then she easily settled into her crib when we got home.  Shane and I played a couple of rounds of Mario Kart before heading to bed ourselves, thankful for a chance to veg after a busy couple of days.
I woke up a little blue on Saturday, already missing my family and feeling the funk of post-holiday letdown, so Shane suggested that we get out and do something special.  We decided to head downtown to take a whirl on the carousel in Westlake Plaza.  Juliette was a little skeptical when we first got on – she gave the pole a shake, found out the horse didn’t spring back and forth like the one at the playground, and promptly decided she wanted to get off.  But oh, the look on her face when the carousel started spinning and her horse started galloping up and down, she dug it.  She smiled like mad, exclaiming “whoooaaa, whoooaaa, whoooaaa!” over and over and over.  Add this to our list of Christmas traditions!
From Westlake, we walked over to the Sheraton to check out the annual gingerbread house display. Â I can’t believe the time (and sugar!) that must go into some of these!
Juliette was mildly impressed by the gingerbread village – she was more excited about being allowed to run free in the lobby after just four short blocks in her stroller.  There’s no stopping this kid.
We walked by the Fairmont Olympic Hotel on our way back to the car and decided to pop into their cozy lobby to say hi to Santa and check out the tree.
Cheers to a holiday filled with very little naughty and SO MUCH NICE.
