Spring has sprung and we’re making our way through our annual tour du blossoms, hitting our list of must-sees before the trees shed their pink and white fluff. I skipped out of work a little early on a particularly sunny day a couple of weeks ago and picked up Jules for an afternoon stroll through the arboretum.
The tulip trees had already dropped a lot of their petals, but the pink and brown forest floor was lovely.
To infinity and BEYOND!
The UW cherry blossoms are also high on our list of March destinations, and since our last visit there was cut short by the rain, we headed back out on a clear-ish Saturday morning to get one more peek.  I was hoping we could perch Jules in a tree and get her to sweetly smile for some glamour shots, but she had other ideas, wildly running loops and loops and loops around the lawn.  I guess that works, too.
Finally! Â She sits! Â (By the way, Shane’s already dubbed her a future Husky.)
Juliette’s been working on her wink – kinda sorta almost there?
Shane was laid up with a doozy of a flu last weekend, so we put our park tour on pause.  The three of us ventured out of the house for church on Easter Sunday and then came home for a low-key egg hunt.  Low-key until Juliette wolfed down her stash of chocolate bunnies, that is…
By early afternoon Shane’s strength was waning, so Jules and I left him on the couch and headed out for our c-group Easter meal.  There was another egg hunt for the kids (more treats!  yay.), ham and rolls and salads and lemon tarts for the grown-ups, and merriment for all.
I’ll admit, with Shane out of commission and me left to do quite a bit of solo parenting, I found myself having a hard time fully dwelling in the goodness of the Easter message.  Yes, God is Risen, but MY PARTNER IS DOWN and my kid is driving me crazy!  Looking at this photo, it’s hard for me to remember what she did to upset me…
So we’ll temporarily sweep those terrible two moments under the rug and revel in the bright spots of Spring. Â There are many.

Saturday morning in Santa Monica was sunny and warm, so we convened on the brightest patch of the grass in our house’s front yard to enjoy a leisurely breakfast.  Jack picked up donuts from three neighborhood joints and we oohed and aahed over the crispy old fashioned from Don’s, the passion fruit/cayenne donut from Blue Star, the butter and salt cake from Sidecar. Aggggh, donuts. So bad. But so good.
Sugar rushed, we drove over to Griffith Park to meet up with La Verne’s sister and her family for a walk in the woods. The path was beautiful, shady and lushly planted. And we had all the time in the world to enjoy it, as it took us 30 minutes to walk a quarter-mile with three toddlers in tow!
We eventually landed at at a small playground and lounged in the sun while the kids played.
We spent the afternoon close to the house; the kids dozed while the grown-ups read or got out for a run. As soon as everyone was back up and at ’em, we squeezed into our rental car, picked up salads and meatballs from Lemonade, and set out for a picnic dinner on the beach.
It was a gorgeous night, but dang, so chilly! Â That ocean wind is something else. Â I don’t think N’s arms ever made it out of his towel blanket!
Jules couldn’t resist one quick lap down to the water’s edge and back.
Teeth chattering, we packed it up and called it a day just as the sun hit the horizon.
The kids took a bubble bath in the jacuzzi tub and were promptly sent to bed so that the rest of us could open a bottle of wine and end our day by the warmth of the living room fireplace. Â Perhaps I over-did it on the bubbles.
We got a slow start on Sunday – Jack headed back to Seattle that morning for a Monday work commitment and LaV read to the kids while I went out to grab coffee.
We eventually rallied, packing up our towels and plastic buckets for a day at the Santa Monica beach.
Apparently Juliette isn’t the only one in our family amused by the tide!
Our friend Emily was in California visiting family and met up with us for a couple of hours. Does this kid look like he’s bringing the party or what?!
I’m already itching to get back to the water with Juliette – her joyous spirit and love of adventure is so evident at the ocean.
Beach bums!
Our hunger eventually got the best of us and we headed over to True Foods for lunch. The kale smoothie was a major hit.
We left the restaurant to find a hip hop flash dance happening in the plaza. Â Work it, Oli!
The kids bopped around for awhile and then it was time to head home for naps (aka, mama-Jules snuggle time!).
We met up with La Verne’s sister and her family one more time on Sunday evening, for dinner in Korea Town. Â Jules slurped down miso soup, Shane gnawed on his Kalbi short ribs, and I dug into my sashimi-topped salad. Â Best food court meal I’ve ever had.
Bedtime was often a bit of a bear at the house, as the kids weren’t entirely sure what to make of sleeping in a new place (together), but by night #4 they went down without much fuss. Â Success!
Monday was go-day, but we had an afternoon flight and a few hours to kill before heading to the airport. Â Get those wiggles out, kids!
After breakfast, we loaded up the car and drove over to Kenneth Hahn Park to hit the playground. Â (May I take your order?)
After 400 pushes on the swings, 12 rounds down the slide, and 45 laps around the lawn, it was time to hit the road.  These two were such great little travel buddies throughout the weekend, entertaining each other as we sat in restaurants or waited in lines.  They’d say the goofiest things, speaking a language we often couldn’t decipher (“Juliette!  Where’s your goo-goo?!”), and then throw their heads back and hold their bellies as they laughed like crazy.  There was also the occasional tear-filled battle over a particular toy or the whiny tattle over an accidental push, but that comes with the territory – love hurts sometimes!  N frequently tells Juliette “You’re my best friend!”, to which she’d replies “Yeah!  I’m your best friend!”  I’m so glad they’re in each other’s lives.
The flight home was long, as we had to sit on the runway for over two hours before take-off due to an issue with the plane. Â Thank goodness for TV screens. Â And snacks. Â And that little bottle of gin Shane stowed in his carry on.
We made it home eventually, with a little sand in our suitcases and a little pink on our cheeks. Â Thanks for doing right by us once again, L.A.! Â We’ll see you next year.
Shane, Jules, and I had such a good time on our Santa Monica trip last year that we decided to make it an annual tradition – March tends to be the time of year that I start to desperately crave a sun break, anyway.  We asked Jack and La Verne if they’d be up for joining us and they agreed with very little (no) arm-twisting. We hopped on a plane last Thursday and headed south, happily waving farewell to a particularly gray, rainy sky.
The flight went off without a hitch and by mid-afternoon we were walking through the door of our Marina del Rey rental. Â Jules and I dozed while the guys went for a run and at 5:30 we piled into our cars to make the short drive to Venice Beach. Â Ahhhh, the California Coast. Â My happy place.
I remember being surprised last year by just how much Juliette loved the ocean.  I also remember how exhausting it was, scooping her up as she darted full-speed toward the water time and again!  She has slightly better judgement now, but still couldn’t resist putting her toes in the foamy tide, laughing hysterically as we chased the waves and they chased us right back.
This picture was taken right before a wave set off a chain of toddler dominoes, at which point we wrapped our soaked kids in towels and decided to head home for dinner, bath, and bed.
Our house was just a few blocks from Abbot Kinney, so Intellegentsia coffee seemed like the perfect place to kick-start our Friday. Â These two were big fans of the pastry offerings.
Properly carbed and caffeinated, we drove over to Tongva Park for a romp on the playground. Â Juliette immediately set up shop in this big metal egg, inviting Shane and me to place an order at her restaurant window (I recommend the imaginary pizza with broccoli and watermelon on top).
Interest in the playground quickly waned when the kids heard the sound of running water. Â I’m not exaggerating when I say that they probably ran 80 laps in this shallow pool, like little ducks splish-splashing back and forth, back and forth.
Bird-watching break.
And then a little boogie.
What, now? Â A spray park? Â This just keeps getting better and better!
I remember taking Juliette down this slide last year – those rollers were a little rough on the rear. Â They still are.
Lunch at Tsujita Ramen followed by dessert at Blockhead has apparently also become something of a tradition.
That green tea shaved ice is the stuff of dreams!
Shane, Juliette, and I all piled into bed at naptime – “bed-sharing” with Juliette hasn’t worked well for us in the past, as she prefers to play rather than sleep when we’re around, but water and sun seem to be the magic ticket for a solid crash.  I came to love these afternoon snuggles.
The Chens had a dinner date with some friends Friday night, so we struck out on our own in search of margaritas and tacos.  Happy Hour at Mercado hit the spot – the carnitas tamales with green sauce were amazing.  We left the restaurant at prime sunset time and Juliette and I jogged the couple blocks to the waterfront while Shane paid the bill and got the car.  Made it!  Barely!
But jeez, was it windy!
Juliette and I took a quick walk down the Santa Monica pier and then we called it a day. Â A very, very good day.
Saturday and Sunday were also packed with sand and sun – stay tuned!

March in Seattle. Â Often gray, often rainy, but dappled with sunshine and color and the promise of brighter days to come. Â The weather today was wild – gray then gorgeous then pouring down rain. Â We made those sunshiny moments count, swinging by the UW Quad before church this morning to check in on the cherry blossoms, which seem to be just a few days from peaking.
We were there for about 15 minutes when the skies opened up and we had to dart to the car to take refuge.  First, though, one quick toss!
As we were leaving church, we got a text from Jack and La Verne, asking if we’d be up for a romp through the arboretum since the skies had cleared again. Â We headed that way and strolled down the blossom-line paths, warily eyeing the gray clouds rolling in while the kids reveled in being outside.
Sure enough, 20 minutes into our walk we felt the first sprinkles and made it back to the car in the nick of time, buckling our seat belts as big fat raindrops pelted our windshield.
Spring, you’re such a tease.

This month has felt long.  Heavy at times, often stressful, full of days that were so short on daylight as darkness seemingly stretched on and on and on.
But I look back at my photos and see there were also a few weekend gems in there, days when the sun came out and we braved the cold for a breath of fresh air. Â We took a sunset walk at Lincoln Park a couple of weeks ago and were reminded that winter does have its charm, in the form of snow-capped mountains and soft, pink light.
Jules and N found wintertime joy as they frolicked in the snow at Hyak on MLK Jr. Day. Â I had to work and missed the fun, but these photos from La Verne were too good not to share!
And thank goodness for last Sunday’s SUNday. Â Shane, Jules, and I hopped in the car before lunchtime and jetted toward Seahurst Park to grab some rays and do some beach-combing. Â I texted the gang to see if they also needed some Vitamin D. Â They did.
Shane’s friend Steve visited us this weekend and we went back to Lincoln Park this morning to brag a little on Seattle’s beauty – Jules and I spent most of yesterday cooped up inside while the guys skied and were clearly in need of some physical activity.
While Shane and Steve waxed on about the ethics of football and the theology of Star Wars, Jules and I threw rocks and looked for shells.
I’m ready to flip that calendar page, but I suppose it turns out January didn’t totally suck.

Hellllloooooooo 2016! Â We ended 2015 with a bang, with snow and champagne and fireworks.
Since Juliette’s daycare was open on New Years Eve but Shane and I both had the day off, we dropped the kiddo at school and reveled in our freedom by heading to the mountains with Jason and Nance for a day of cross-country skiing.
It was cold out there, but clear and absolutely gorgeous.
And once I found my stride and really got going, the numbness in my fingers and toes waned. Â I can see why Shane has fallen in love with this sport – it’s hard work, but also invigorating and kind of soothing.
We made it as far as this serene lookout over Keechelus Lake…
Which seemed like a perfect place to pause and toast with a little tipple from Shane’s flask.
Once we’d caught our breath, we headed back toward the car, making good time on the return leg – I was kind of getting the hang of this skiing thing!
Made it!
We warmed ourselves with lunch at Kukai ramen in Bellevue on the way home and then squeezed in a quick couch doze before heading out to pick up Juliette and then hit the beach. Â Brian and Nicole were bonfire-ing over at Alki and that seemed like a perfect place to watch the sun go down on 2015.
The Rust clan came over for dinner and we partied hard until about 8:00. Â That champagne I mentioned earlier? Â We cracked open the bottle at 7:30. Â And those fireworks? Â I vaguely remember hearing them around midnight, as I rolled over in bed and sleepily muttered “it’s tooooo loud!” Â We’re wild, I know.
Speaking of wild, though, there are hundreds of crazies that jump into the freezing cold Puget Sound from Alki beach every New Years morning! Â Shane, Jules, and I decided to head over there Friday morning to watch the show.
And to cheer on Jason and his sister. Â I suspect these two might have a slight adrenaline addiction.
Gosh, they’re fun, though!
Brian and Nicole were also there, but we’d missed seeing them take the group plunge.  I joked that I really wanted a group pic, which apparently was all the incentive they needed to jump right back in!
Nuts, I tell you.
We went back to Jason and Nancy’s with the Polar Bears for hot coffee and treats – we’ve been brunching at their house on New Years day for a few years running now.  But this was the first time baby E joined the mix!  Juliette was very excited by the prospect of holding a real, live baby doll.
We passed the rest of the day at home, mellowing out after a couple of busy days.  Shane and I spent the evening talking about the year to come, planning vacations and making goals, building anticipation and excitement about what 2016 may hold.
Like…more snow days! Â We loaded the sled and our snow gear into the car yesterday morning and set out for Hyak. Â It was another gorgeous day in the mountains, but also super-duper cold. Â Jules tolerated the biting wind for about five minutes…
And then didn’t want to do anything but nuzzle into Daddy’s chest.
We tried to shake it off, but this picture says it all…
Shane and I each had a couple of fun runs on the sled, and Jules was a good sport, but it wasn’t long before we packed it up and called it a day. Â We’ll give the snow another go on a 30-degree-plus kind of day.
This kid was done.
But man, she sure perked up once we were all tucked into the car with hot cider and snacks! Â A blanket, a banana, and a warm drink, and she was exclaiming, “that was fun, mama!”
We’ve been to Portland, we’ve opened gifts, Juliette has mastered the first two verses of Away in a Manger, and now I’m making my peace with the fact that it’s time to take down our increasingly droopy Christmas tree and call it a wrap. Â But Christmastime 2015 sure was good while it lasted…
We headed down to Portland on Christmas Eve with a trunk full of gifts and baked goodies. Â Juliette was a champ in the car – I didn’t have to resort to pulling out the candy canes until we were just a few miles from the Oregon border.
We spent the afternoon lounging around the house, snacking and doing puzzles and testing the waters of Mitch and Kathryn’s new hot tub.
All three girls were completely mesmerized when we turned on The Polar Express after dinner. Â I told Juliette to sit back and relax, but the excitement was just too much!
Christmas morning was a gift-opening bonanza, as the kids tore into present after present.
And then…that magic blanket of quiet that falls over the house as the kids play with their new toys and the grown-ups pour themselves another round of coffee.
Interrupted only by a brief-but-hilarious puppet show, courtesy of Auntie Kathryn.
By late morning we were all ready for some fresh air, so we donned our hats and jackets and headed outdoors for a few laps around the front yard and a trip to the park.
Juliette falls a little more in love with Elise with each visit. Â “Elise, sit by me? Â Elise, hold my hand? Â Where Elise go? Â Eliiiiiiise?”
I made sure Morgan knew that if she ever felt the least bit left out, I was ready and willing to hug it out!
Mitch pulled off a killer Christmas meal, complete with country ham and smoked brisket and roasted veggies. Â There was much to toast to at dinner that night.
We spent Saturday morning at Westmoreland Park, braving the cold for the sake of letting the kids get their wiggles out.
This is my dad doing his best Mary Tyler Moore. Â Nailed it.
Cousins!
The afternoon was quiet – naps and Magna Tiles and books.
And then Jules woke up!
Shane and I decided to beat the Sunday traffic and hit the road back to Seattle Saturday night, hopeful that Juliette would snooze in the car. Â And what better way to tucker out a toddler pre-drive than a living room dance party?!
Things got crazy.
My brother is the best.
We said our farewells and tucked Juliette into her car seat for the long ride home.  I felt those first twinges of the post-Christmas blues while we were on the road – sad that the anticipation was over, disappointed that Shane and my poor mom had been laid up with colds for much of our time in Portland, a little nostalgic for years gone by as I reminisced about Christmases past when Elise and then Morgan and then Juliette were wee little babies.  Gosh, how time flies.
I didn’t wallow for long, though – Sunday was a perfect, cozy day at home and I reveled in seeing Juliette enjoy her gifts (those Magna Tiles are money!) and then tidying up, doing an end-of-the-year closet purge so that we start 2016 off on an organized note.
And it turned out there was still merriment to be had! Â We took Juliette to see the lights at Gene Coulon last night to put one last check mark on our list of holiday traditions.
It was a crisp, clear gorgeous night.
Blues, shmoos – this kid has been all joy this past week.
And with that, I think I’m ready for the New Year. Â Praise be to God for a blessed Christmas season.
Posted by kellyschnell on December 30, 2015 at 10:59 pm under jules, portland, shane, the fam. Comments Off on and a very merry christmas!.
It’s been a jolly month, packed with all of our favorite traditions. We’ve spent lots of time with the gang, eating and drinking and shopping/sledding (more on that later), and the house feels extra-cozy, lit by the sparkle of our Christmas tree.
Gosh, I love a good tree. And ten years of trekking out to Mountain Creek Tree Farm has made us experts in the art of tree-choosing. I wanted to bring Juliette fully on board with the excitement of the tree hunt and spent the whole drive out to North Bend pumping her up. “We’re going to find the perfect Christmas tree!!! This will be so fun! Christ-mas tree! Christ-mas tree! Christ-mas tree!” I was bound and determined, she would love it.
But after wandering among the pines for 45 seconds, I could see she was unimpressed. She looked up at me and whined, “Where’s my Christmas treat, mamaaaaa?”
Thank goodness for that rogue Halloween lollipop I found buried at the bottom of my purse!
Once sugared up, Juliette was ready to get in on the game of choosing a tree. The whole concept of appropriate sizing was lost on her, though…
Finally, we spotted it! A perfect Fraser Fir. Tall but not too tall, full but not too full – a few hacks and it was ours!
A tree that good deserves an apple cider cheers.
Juliette helped me trim the tree that night – I gave her a little felted penguin as this year’s ornament and she proudly hung it up. Then took it down. She’s been carrying it around with her ever since, sleeping with it in her crib every night. Next year I’ll give her something a little less cuddly.
One of the most cherished things on my December calendar is my annual weekend getaway with Nance and La Verne. We had such a great time at Cedarbrook Lodge last year that we decided to book a room there again for a night of eating/lounging/livin’ la vida kid-free. But first, shopping! We spent the afternoon at the Auburn Supermall, starting with a leisurely perusal through J Crew and Loft and Old Navy, and ending with a mad tear through Gap and Banana Republic for a few last purchases before heading to the hotel for check-in.
We did good.
We spent the evening soaking in the hot tub and then stuffing ourselves at the hotel restaurant. I woke up on Sunday morning relaxed, refreshed, and a little surprised to see that I’d slept until 9 am! That hasn’t happened in…27 months!
It’s hard for me to put into words how much these ladies mean to me. Seriously, it’s hard – when La Verne started to express her gratitude for our friendship over breakfast, I got all choked up and misty-eyed. Suffice to say, I love them like sisters.
As we lingered over our morning coffee, I wondered how Shane and Jules were faring. Answer: GREAT. He and Jason had taken the kids up to the mountains for some snow-packed adventures, and Juliette was lovin’ that freshy-freshy-pow-pow.
The whole weekend had gone off without a hitch – so well, in fact, that we’re already talking about next year! Up to the ante to two nights away, maybe?
Finally, FONDUE. December just wouldn’t feel right without gathering the whole gang together around pots of melted cheese. First, though, some appetite-building at the Seward Park Pre-Fondue 5K. Nailed it.
And a quick run up to the mountains for some sledding and snow-gazing. Shane has become quite the snow-bird this month and has taken an intense interest in mountains and cross-country skiing (I think it’s the new all-wheel drive car). Jules and I wanted in on the fun, so we tossed our new sled and all our warmest clothes into the trunk and headed east! We ended up at the Hyak Snow Park, impressed by their monster sledding hill.
Juliette had a blast, tearing down the hill with Shane. I decided to give it a go – Juliette nestled into my lap and we were off!
And it was super fun, until the sled started to tip a bit and I had to put my boot out to level us – the ensuing snow-spray was pretty unpleasant. I’m afraid Juliette’s laughter quickly turned to tears.
So we took a snack break in a snow bank while Shane headed out for a short run on his skis.
(Meet Subaru Shane!)
We cajoled Juliette into one last run down the hill and left on a high note.
We warmed ourselves that evening at Jack and La Verne’s house, feasting on cheese-dipped bread and veggies, then chocolate-dipped marshmallows and fruit. The White Elephant gift exchange is a critical part of the evening program, and people really stepped up their game this year.
Baby A was surprised to find that the amber liquid in that cute little bottle tasted nothing like apple juice (kidding, it’s not open!).
“What…is this?” was muttered throughout the evening.
There was much, much cheering when Jason opened the one remaining gift to find…a goldfish!
Christmas came early this year, huh, Gryff?
We wrapped up the night with our active rendition of the The Twelve Days of Christmas. Everyone had a different part to mime, and wow, by my fifth round of playing the swan-a-swimming, I was out of breath!
Things wound down after that as people rushed their little ones home to bed. Ok, clearly, these big kids are not winding down. I’m not entirely sure what’s going on here – are they trying pull that poor boy’s limbs off?
Jules and Nico snuck in one last duet before we said our good-byes.
We capped off our merry weekend with our annual “family dinner” with the Rusts and the Chens on Sunday evening. Jack popped open the best bottle of champagne I’ve ever tasted, Nance whipped up her special soup and homemade biscuits, we exchanged gifts and kicked back, savoring all the joy in that house.
Holiday season is officially here, ushered in with a cozy Thanksgiving weekend in Portland with my brother and his family. Â We rolled up to their house Thursday around lunchtime and settled right in. Â Morgan and Elise, how I’ve missed you!
Jules was also thrilled to be reunited with her cousins, hardly leaving their sides for the duration of our stay and whining, “I want to see Morgan and Eliiiiiiiise, mama!” when it was time to head downstairs for nap or bedtime.
While Mitch and Kathryn slaved away in the kitchen on Thursday afternoon, Shane and I gladly took on kid-duty, bundling up the girls and running around with them in the backyard.
I love you, Jules.
The wind picked up and froze our fingers and noses, so we headed inside to drink tea and paint turkeys.
We feasted that night on beef stew and turkey and stuffing and roasted veggies. Â We took turns saying what we’re most thankful for, and family topped the list for each one of us. Â Actually, Morgan might have said cookies, but I’m sure family was a close second!
Friday morning was chilly but sunny, so Kathryn and I jetted out for a trail run while Shane held down the fort at home.
We came home to a house of stir-crazy girls, so we all headed over to a nearby playground to get the wiggles out.
Ahhhhhhh, that sun!
Sufficiently dosed with fresh air and vitamin D, we were all content to spend the afternoon inside, doing puzzles and reading by the fire.
We went out for dinner that night at a nearby brewpub, threw the kids in the tub, promptly tucked them into bed, and then opened up a bottle of Port to commemorate a day well spent.
Saturday was another gorgeous day, but we got a slow start and let the girls hang out in their comfy polka dot footie pajamas until mid-morning.
Finally, we rallied and drove over to George Rogers Park to check out the beach.
Who says you can’t play in the lake at the end of November?
I think Juliette was wearing thin by this point, a little fatigued by trying to keep up with the big kids.
Luckily, I had a magic fruit snack in my pocket!
Morgan was insistent that we check out the playground, which turned out to be an excellent call, as it was a sunny spot stocked with beautiful new play equipment.
They even had Twister!
Elise and Morgan took turns riding in the back of our car as we went to and fro, and Jules loved having a backseat buddy.
We spent another quiet afternoon back at the house, again curled up by the fire for a book/puzzle/board game bonanza.
We said our good-byes and hit the road to Seattle on Saturday night.  Juliette chattered and sang until finally letting her eyelids fall shut around 9:30, when we were just 20 minutes from home.  Luckily, she hardly protested when I moved her from the car to her crib, too tired to put up much of a fight.  We’d all played hard over the past couple days.  We had run, swung, climbed, skipped rocks, laughed, done that dang monkey puzzle 87 times.  We had found much to be thankful for.
