I’ve had the chorus of Grease’s “Summer Nights” looping through my head over and over these past few days – you know, “Summer lovin’, had me a blast, oh yeah!“.  It’s not so much that I have romance or leather pants on the brain (although Shane will forever be my Danny Zuko), it’s that I’m LOVIN’ this summer weather.  Sandals and slightly pink shoulders and a re-commitment to get out and explore our favorite parks.  Evening jogs with Juliette, interrupted by a quick joyous romp through the Jefferson splash pad.  Popsicles and bare baby bellies.  Turtle hunts and sandy feet.  I swear, I can feel the vitamin D coursing through my veins, and it’s like a hit of happy.
We spent Saturday morning at Juanita Bay Park in Kirkland, checking out the wildlife and playing at the beach.
And to top off a stretch of particularly glorious sun-shiny days, Juliette’s best little buddy turned two over the weekend! Â We were thrilled to celebrate with him, with a chariot ride and barbecue and CAKE (that taste of frosting was possibly the high point of Juliette’s entire life thus far).
I know, Jules, I KNOW! Â So good, right?

We boarded a plane bound for the great midwest a week ago and after the longest-ever four-hour flight, we landed in Minnesota for a happy reunion with the Schnell clan.  It was 10 pm when we rolled up to Shane’s parents’ house, so we tucked in a tuckered-out girl, did a little catchup with the family, and then fell into bed ourselves, exhausted but relieved to have made it through the journey with only minimal tears (alright, in truth, Jules cried a lot…but I only cried a little!).
After a Friday morning run into town to pick up a few essentials, we spent some time meeting the next door neighbors and Shane’s mom and dad’s new house.
We went for a walk down the dirt road at the end of their driveway and Jules found a mud puddle she couldn’t resist. Â I didn’t have any napkins or wipes on me, so Shane showed her how to wipe her hands on the grass.
She thought this was a pretty great trick.
Shane’s sister and nephew came by later that afternoon – Avery warmed up to his uncle the moment Shane offered to toss the football around with him.
Shane’s dad thought Jules would love checking out his tractor, so we all walked down the road to his shop that evening.
She was a little skeptical when we first put her in there…
But then Denny fired that thing up and let her hold the steering wheel – she loves being in the drivers seat.
She looked on a little enviously when it was Avery’s turn to take it for a spin.
Our nieces and brother-in-law joined us that evening – felt so good to have the whole gang together!
Shanay and Hayden were incredibly sweet to Juliette, doting on her, hugging her and reading to her and letting her play with their phones – this girl was in cousin heaven.
We feasted on burgers and steaks hot off the grill for dinner and crashed hard that night, still a little weary from the previous day’s travel.
On Saturday morning we headed over to Hayden’s school to watch her softball tournament. Â It was drizzly and a bit chilly that morning, but Juliette was happy to hang out in the rain and cheer on her cousin. Â Getting to sit in the dugout was a major bonus.
Shane and I left Juliette with Grandma and Grandpa that evening so that we could grab a drink with his sister and brother-in-law. Â We did some quality catching up at Sixth Ave Wine and Ale and arrived back at the house just as the skies opened up and the rain started to POUR.
And POUR. Â I thought this was just a typical midwestern thunderstorm, until I heard the guys talking about a tornado watch – a funnel cloud had been spotted a half mile away. Â Shane’s mom started pulling out blankets and pillows and piling them in their utility room, in case we needed to take refuge. Â Jules looks awfully nervous, doesn’t she?
We made it through the storm unscathed, but wowsers! Â What a night!
We spent Sunday morning at church, celebrating Shanay’s confirmation – she was radiant. Â She’s become such a mature, beautiful, kind young woman.
Juliette sat through the service quietly and contentedly, happy to hop from my lap to Aunt Tiff’s to Grandma’s to Grandpa’s.
We ate lunch at the church and then took advantage of the sunshine to romp outdoors before naptime.
Juliette loved the freedom of the wide open spaces – we spend a lot of time outside in Seattle, but this may have been her first opportunity to dance in the middle of the street.
And those horses! Â She couldn’t get enough.
Shane’s mom and I spent the afternoon rearranging furniture in the living room – it was fun for me to help them settle into their new place (they moved in just a few hours before we arrived on Thursday!).  The skies turned gray and we weathered another storm, but it passed quickly.  Those colors, though!  Gorgeous.
We had an appointment for a family photo shoot at 6:00, but first, the obligatory stop at Big Ole, the town’s pride and joy (see Jules down there, by his foot?).
We went back to the house after our photo session for pizza and ice cream – I came to love those big family dinners, gathering around the kitchen island while eating and drinking. Â Our dining room table has felt especially quiet these past couple days!
Monday was cold – temps had been in the 70’s on Sunday, but had dropped to the 30’s overnight.  We did a little shopping with Shane’s mom that morning and then I told Juliette we’d make good on our promise to take her to a lake to throw rocks.  We hopped out of the car at lake L’Homme Dieu, felt the biting wind and saw the whitecaps on the water and then called it.  We tried.
We spent the evening at Tiff’s house – Juliette was quite taken with Pinto Bean, their rambunctious shih tzu.
Cousins!
We let Juliette stay up past her bedtime to eat watermelon with Grandma and Grandpa. Â My heart was fit to burst, watching these two love our daughter so openly and generously throughout our stay.
And then one last story…
We said our good-byes early Tuesday morning and hit the road to Minneapolis.  The flight back to Seattle was smooth and completely tear-free, so we have lifted Juliette’s previously-imposed travel ban.  It felt good to walk through our front door Tuesday afternoon and settle back into home, but man, those Schnells.  They’re a fun, incredibly kind bunch.  I miss them.

Let’s hear it for the mamas! Â And for Shane, who got up with Jules and let me stay in bed as long as I wanted to yesterday morning. Â And then gifted me with a fancy new blender (just in time for smoothie season!). Â And then fetched me a strawberry danish from the bakery. Â And then planned a perfect family outing. Â I was just going to ask for a couple of free hours to run some errands, but sheesh, that guy goes big.
We set out for Rattlesnake Ridge after we had breakfasted and dressed – we thought we’d give the trails a go with the stroller and embark on a short family hike. Â We didn’t make it far as the terrain got rugged pretty quickly, but we found this gorgeous little path off the main trail where we could let Juliette run around and look for caterpillars.
Seriously, that girl was digging those caterpillars!
Once we had terrorized enough insects, we walked down to the lake to spread out a blanket, throw rocks, and blow bubbles. Â Juliette ran to the water’s edge and back, returning to me to stuff a couple of crackers in her mouth and gulp down some water before setting off again. Â I stretched out in the sun, basking in the opportunity to just be still, which happens so rarely these days.
And when the water lost its appeal, Shane was on bubbles duty!
I eventually took a turn, because, well, I actually love having her nestled into my lap…
We hit the road around noon, worried we were cutting it a little close to naptime, but Juliette spent the whole ride home happily chattering in the backseat. Â She must have gotten the Mother’s Day memo!
We all snoozed in the afternoon and then puttered around the house before heading over to Jack and La Verne’s for a pizza feast with the gang. Â Jack enjoyed some quality time with G…
And then put him and Isaiah to work, offering to pay them each a quarter for each bucket of weeds they filled!  I’m not sure this constituted a fair wage, and judging from Jack’s face, I think he knew he was making out like a bandit.
Jules stood by and watched, pigtails askew, face sticky with watermelon juice, and belly threatening to burst out of her tank top.  It’s her “summer look”.
And goodness, she was feeling the love for Nico that night, reaching out to give him a squeeze whenever he got within grabbing range. Â Usually he stands stock-still and looks a little startled when Jules comes at him with one of her bear hugs, but on this particular evening he actually reciprocated!
Or is he pushing her away? Â I can’t tell…
Hugs aside (or included?), these two have so much fun together.
And speaking of fun, Shane and Jason busted into Jack’s liquor cabinet while Jack supervised all four children on the other side of the yard.  Shameless!
I’ve learned so much about being a mom from these two ladies, felt so supported in the midst of craziness or fatigue, so inspired by the ways they love their kids.
There was a rousing game of “toss the boys”…
And then, finally, we were all tuckered out. Â I had a hard time prying Juliette out of Jack’s arms, as she looked ready to fall asleep on his chest.
We washed the dirt from between Juliette’s toes and then she crashed in my arms after only a couple of rounds of the sunshine song.  She’d played hard.
When we’re in the depths of toddler tantrums or early wake-ups or seemingly endless whiny requests for Elmo, I try to remember the good times, to call upon memories of joy and laughter and sweetness.  So I’m tucking yesterday away for a rainy day – the motherhood-scale is feeling very much tipped in my favor at the moment.

Since our last visit to Portland at Christmas, Elise has turned 7, Morgan has traded in her training wheels for a big-girl bike, and Jules has officially left baby-hood behind and become a full-fledged toddler. Time flies. Thankfully, no matter how much has changed, it seems these kids pick up right where they last left off. When we rolled into town on Friday afternoon, it took all of three minutes for the girls to start playing and laughing and carrying on together.
I was a little skeptical on Friday evening as to whether or not all three of them would still fit in the bathtub together, but Elise and Morgan were willing to fold up their legs and give it a try! Jules was thrilled.
We got a slow start on Saturday morning, letting the girls run around the house until Juliette started doing her “outside?” chant.
We headed down the street to the neighborhood playground, where I watched Juliette go down the slide that Morgan and Elise have traversed hundreds of times. I’ve been snapping photos from this very same spot for years now!
The playground has apparently lost its charm with the big kids, though – they’ve moved on to new adventures.
After getting our wiggles out, Shane, Jules and I drove over to the Pearl District for an REI run and a stop at Barista for a perfect latte.
And then we popped over to Portsmouth Park to watch Elise play soccer. That girl’s got hustle. And wow, she looks old here, huh?
When Morgan and Juliette tired of sitting on the sidelines, they kept each other company on the playground.
We napped for awhile in the afternoon and then soaked up some rays in the backyard before heading out once again, for a picnic dinner at Cathedral Park under the St. Johns bridge.
We ate chicken wings and blew dandelion puffs and bubbles and ran races and stretched out on the grass in the late evening sun. I’m so thankful for family. And 70-degree weather!
After waiting for nearly an hour for a train to pass and let us out of the parking lot (patience is a virtue, patience is a virtue, patience is a virtue), we jetted home to get the kids to bed, crack open a bottle of port, and do some distraction-free catching up with Mitch and Kathryn.
We found ourselves at the neighborhood playground again on Sunday morning, so that the girls could ride their bikes. Or so that the boys could ride their bikes?
We packed up our things and set out for the beach later that morning. First, though, I wanted to snap a photo of the Jarrell clan in front of their house – they’re moving to the other side of Portland later this month, and while I’m super-excited for them to settle into their sweet new digs, I’ll miss this place! We have a lot of memories here.
No time for nostalgia, though, when you’ve got kids rearing to get to the beach. Onward!
As per usual, the sand and water seemed to imbue Juliette with an extra dose of already-plentiful energy. The running!
We said our goodbyes around lunchtime with hugs all around. Morgan got an extra-long embrace from Jules – those two had been thick as thieves all weekend.
No more of this more-than-4-months-between-visits business – see you in July, Jarrells!

Spring is in full-swing here in Seattle – budding leaves, fluffy blossoms, and quite a few of those sun-shiny teaser days that make you want to pull out your sandals and retire your winter coat (although I’ve learned by now that such days are often followed by 50 degrees and rain). Â I’ve gotten into the habit of grabbing my camera when we leave the house, as these blooms (and Juliette’s joy over them) are too good not to capture. Â Get your scroll finger ready – I went a little nuts!
We made it out to UW the third weekend in March, just in time to catch the cherry blossoms before they all fell to the ground. Â It had rained that morning and the sunlight struggling through the clouds was extra warm, making the quad extra magical.
Juliette ran wild in the blossom-littered grass – given our mild winter, this was as close as she got to playing in the snow this year!
We’ve lucked out with a string of sunny Thursdays and have been celebrating our mama-Jules days with trips to parks and playgrounds. Â The sand box at Whale Tale Park near Alki is a new favorite.
Juliette and Nico spent a Thursday afternoon harvesting daisies at Seward Park.
We went for a leisurely stroll through Colman Park a couple of weeks ago – I was disappointed to see that the p-patch was no longer planted with dahlias, but we did find a rogue tulip to admire.
And so much lush, lush green!
Juliette and I made a game of picking and blowing dandelion puffs – her first couple of tries resulted in a mouth full of fuzz, but now she’s got it down.
We walked to the bakery last Thursday and stopped to fawn over these pink pom-poms near the library.
And then headed over to Lake Washington Boulevard for a walk down the tree-lined sidewalk.
PINK!
And what’s even more exciting than flowers?  Springtime brings BASEBALL!  Juliette donned her cap for the Giants season opener and we let her stay up past her bedtime to catch the first couple of innings.
We’re going to make a die-hard fan out of this kid.
Each time I step outside, a few more blossoms have wilted and fallen.  That’s the downside to Spring – it’s so quickly fleeting, and try as I might to memorialize each flower, each angelic daisy-crowned grin with a photo, there’s no stopping the passage of time.  Before I know it, I’ll be waxing poetic about autumn’s golden leaves falling from the trees!  Then again, each day brings us closer to freshly picked berries and swimsuits and splash sessions in the lake.  And watermelon!  And warmth.
Consider me consoled.

It’s getaway season!  The Schnell clan hit the road again last Friday, loading up the car for a weekend on Whidbey Island with the gang.  It was raining cats and dogs when we pulled up to our waterfront rental – waves roared and crashed just 50 feet from the living room windows while Nico and Jules pounded on the sliding glass door and shouted “Wa-wa!  Wa-wa!”.  But just as I cranked up the heat and poured myself a hot cup of tea, the clouds parted and the sun shone – suddenly it was rock-throwing weather!
Isaiah was particularly excited to dip his toes in the water.
We wolfed down a couple of pizzas for dinner and then whisked all of the kiddos upstairs for bedtime. Â La Verne and I caught an amazing sunset together while Jack and Shane got the little ones to sleep. Â The sound of the smooth, polished rocks clicking against each other as the waves receded was the stuff of dreams.
Juliette heard the ocean calling her name at 6:30 the next morning – Shane took her out on our bedroom’s deck to enjoy the dawn while I took my time crawling out from under the covers.
We ate a leisurely breakfast while the kids colored, stacked Legos, and played trains.
But the mid-morning stir-crazies inevitably set in, so we headed into Coupeville to check out the (tiny) farmer’s market and walk the pier.
We went back to the house around lunchtime, where Nico and Jules each waged epic naptime battles against La Verne and me.  Once all was quiet upstairs, I poured myself a cup of coffee and went outside to happily recline in one of the porch’s Adirondacks.
Shane used his “quiet time” to build a tide marker with the boys. Â Thick as thieves, these three.
And Jason went for a spin in the kayak that was propped against the side of the house. Â I, on the other hand, sat some more.
Juliette sensed there was fun being had without her and only slept an hour – she was eager to get out on the rocks with Gryff.
Such mutual adoration!
My Mother Goose moment:
This sweet kid can’t resist jumping into a family photo (even if it’s not his family!).
Jules and I sat on the rocks together for a solid thirty minutes, looking for birds and watching the boys play while we chatted and snuggled. Â I forgive you for those pre-nap hysterics, baby.
We eventually made our way to the porch for snacktime and happy hour.
Juliette compared her grapes with Nico’s and ultimately decided his were more desirable, though they came from the same bag. Â Figures.
CHEERS.
We drank champagne, munched on steamed mussels, and caught the day’s final rays before throwing the kids in the tub and tucking them into bed.
Jack made his famous spaghetti alle vongole for dinner and then we stayed up late, drinking and talking and asking increasingly personal questions as the night wore on. Â Felt good to really get real with these folks, without the distraction of kids under foot. Â It had been too long.
Gryffin’s first comment when we all stumbled downstairs on Sunday morning was, “Oh. Â Looks like you haven’t had time to brush Baby Jules’ hair!” Â ‘Fraid not.
Jason took Isaiah out for a spin on the kayak while Nance baked breakfast scones. Â Shane put our favorite praise playlist on the speakers and as I sipped my coffee and looked out at the incredible view, I took a deep breath, filling my heart with the smells and sounds and sights of all God’s goodness. Â I missed being part of our church’s Easter service, but in that moment, I was still so acutely aware that He Is Risen.
“Hey kids! Â Smile for the camera!” Â Nailed it.
Once the scones had been devoured and the eggs had been found and the cars had been loaded, it was time to hang up the ol’ kayak and say Sayonara to our beachfront abode.
But first, one last hug!
We drove through Skagit Valley tulip country on the way home and when we heard that the flowers were in full bloom, we decided to brave the crowds and take a peek. Â Gryffin and Isaiah showed Jules the way.
And ho-ly tulips, Batman! Â It was gorgeous.
I’m not sure where Juliette picked up the concept of flower-sniffing, but she couldn’t help herself.
A final good-bye to our friends and we were back on the road. Â It had been an atypical Easter Sunday, but no less joyous than any year past. Â Thanks be to God.

A few weeks ago at one of my Friday morning mama/baby play dates, we started talking about how fun it would be to all get away for a weekend together. I know – two days in one house with fourteen adults and seven toddlers? Could be fun. Could also be complete mayhem… But Adrienne found us some huge kid-friendly digs in Port Townsend and everyone else jumped at the idea, so Shane and I decided we were up for the adventure.
And while I’d hardly call the weekend relaxing, it was indeed full of laughter and play and lots good food. As we all sat down for dinner on Friday, I was struck by how incredibly blessed I feel to be part of this crew.
Once the kids were all tucked into bed that night, the grown-ups headed out for s’mores and stories at the backyard firepit, huddling together until the rain drove us inside.
We were up bright and much too early on Saturday, but it was nice to look out at the early morning fog with a cup of coffee in hand.
Once we’d all eaten and properly caffeinated, we drove over to Fort Warden State Park to hang out on the beach. The kids contentedly played in the sand for nearly an hour – such focus!
And when all that scooping lost its charm, there were rocks to be thrown.
We went back to the house for lunch and a little pre-nap storytime with La Verne.
And while the kiddos slept, we assembled three big pans of lasagna for dinner – cooking for 21 is no joke!
When everyone was back up and at ’em, we herded the little ones out back for an Easter egg hunt. On your marks, get set…
Go!
Juliette made quick work of filling up her basket.
And then emptying her basket, putting all of her eggs into N’s little bunny. We were so proud of her for sharing! Until she reached over and tried to yank N’s whole basket out of his hands. I’m afraid her generosity only comes in quickly-fleeting bursts.
Oh, Jules!
Once the last egg had been found, we worked out the last of those afternoon wiggles in the house’s ball-filled garage…
And the crazy upstairs playroom, which was piled with giant foam blocks.
The house was equipped for plenty of toys for the grown-ups, too! Seriously, it was like an 8-bedroom amusement park.
We chowed down on our lasagna, did the bath-time/bed-time circus, and the house was quiet by 8 pm. Amanda popped popcorn, the last few beers were pulled from the fridge, and we all sat down to cap off the day with a rousing game of True Colors.
Everyone slept soundly that night (a minor miracle!) and then we gathered in the kitchen for Sunday breakfast as our weekend in toddler town wound down. Juliette and N pounded out a few tunes on the piano while Shane and I packed up our things.
There were times when the house crazily rang with sounds of thuds and laughter and cries and squeals, and there were times when a kid or two went temporarily missing, but really, the weekend couldn’t have gone better. We partied hard, pigged out, played and played and played. No doubt, we’re a fun, wild bunch.

Saturday brought more sun and temps approaching 80 degrees, so we grabbed our beach towel and sunscreen and headed out to grab some rays.  But first, breakfast at M Street Kitchen.
(Please, Mama, can I have pancakes and syrup, light on the pancakes, heavy on the syrup?)
We spent the rest of the morning at Annenberg Beach House, melting into our lounge chairs while Juliette ran wild in the splash park. Â Dude, this girl loves water.
I went for a run while Shane put a tuckered-out Jules down for a nap and then hydrated with a bottle of bubbly on our house’s patio. Â Perfecto.
Juliette woke up pink-cheeked and crazy-haired and came out to join me. Â Those arms! Â I’ve missed seeing them these past few months.
We packed up our things and then spent an hour strolling down the 3rd Street promenade, stopping every few minutes to watch the street performers and share a fro-yo. Â Since we were so close to Tongva Park, and since Juliette had such a blast there the day before, we popped over for another go at the playground.
Soon it was beach:30, so we made our way to the sand, armed with pail and shovel, and settled in for another sunset.
She makes me so damn happy. Â I love to be able to return the favor.
A breeze kicked up as the sun went down and Juliette wanted nothing more than to crawl into papa’s lap and snuggle. Â It took about 37 laps up and down the shore, but we had finally worn this girl out!
I sighed as we watched the sun drop behind the horizon, sad to see our final evening in Santa Monica come to a close. Â Shane consoled me by volunteering to go pick up burgers and shakes from In-N-Out for dinner while I put Juliette to bed. Â Yes, please! Â We wolfed down our takeout and then I fell asleep on the couch at 8:00, exhausted in the most satisfying way.
We didn’t need to head to the airport until late morning on Sunday, so we swung by the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market for awhile to eat breakfast and let Jules get her pre-flight wiggles out. Â She was a big fan of the folk band that was playing there, knee-slapping and hand-clapping along with the beat.
And then, too soon, it was time to head to LAX and make the trek back to Seattle. Â Juliette did alright on the flight, squirming a bit through the first half, but eventually passing out in my arms. Â And then, we were home. Â Home sweet home, where we don’t have to worry about getting a sunburn or dumping the sand out of our shoes (I’m doing my best to look on the bright side here).
Thanks, Santa Monica, for treating us right! Â See you next winter.

March is that time of year in Seattle when I really start getting antsy, when I start itching to shed my coat and my sweater so that I can feel the sun on my shoulders.  It’s the time of year when I’d give anything to just be warm, to wear sandals rather than wool socks and boots.  I remarked last month that this winter was feeling particularly long, with all the sniffles and the stir-craziness, so Shane worked his travel-planning magic and booked us cheap flights and a sweet little cottage in Santa Monica for a long weekend.  Juliette has recently become fascinated by airplanes, pointing to the sky and exclaiming “errrrr-pay!” each time one flies overhead, so she was most certainly up for the adventure.
We set out Thursday morning and made it to the gate with plenty of time to spare – I sipped my coffee while Jules ran circles around us, stopping every couple of minutes to bang on the windows and watch the planes take off.
We had armed ourselves with a bag full of treats and distractions for the plane ride and decided that any ground rules about screen time or snacks are just that – ground rules.  The air is an anything-goes zone, where there’s no shame in letting your toddler load up on sugar or play with your gadgets.  Juliette spent the first half of the flight munching on cookies and cheddar bunnies while pretending to chat on my phone.
We played one round of the Peekaboo-Barn app we’d put on the iPad and then, somewhere around Oregon, she crashed, waking just as we pulled up to the gate. Â Whew!
We picked up our rental car without much fuss and made to it Santa Monica in time for a late lunch at True Foods Kitchen. Â I bought these silly sunglasses on clearance last fall, and finally! Â An excuse to wear them! Â Too cool for school, that kid.
We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing at the house and then headed to the nearby beach to catch the sunset. Â Juliette was a little tentative when I first set her down on the sand, not sure what to make of the way her feet sunk and squished, but once I handed her a shovel and her bucket, she was content to sit and scoop away.
And then I took her down to the water’s edge so that the waves could lap at her toes, expecting her to be a little nervous at her first encounter with the ocean.
Nervous, schmervous!  She went nuts, squealing with joy and chasing after the waves as they receded.  Shane and I spent the next half hour running after her, trying (unsuccessfully) to direct her along the water’s edge rather than straight into it.  She face-planted a couple of times in the cold wet sand, but was up and at it again before we could even brush her off.  We’ve got a beach-baby on our hands!
The beach in Santa Monica is amazing, nearly deserted on a Thursday night and stretching on for miles in either direction.  We stuck around long enough to wave bye-bye to the sun, and then jetted back to the house for bath and bedtime.  Juliette fell asleep about 25 seconds after I turned off her light and Shane and I enjoyed a couple of hours of quiet time, sharing a pizza and a bottle of wine before conking out ourselves.
We were up bright and early on Friday, eager to see what else Santa Monica had up its sleeve. Â We started with breakfast at Huckleberry, for mimosas and monster egg sandwiches.
Then we drove over to Abbot Kinney to peek in the windows of the hip restaurants and trendy shops.
Juliette didn’t want anything to do with her stroller that day, so we booked it over to Venice Beach to look for a place to let her loose.
We found a great little playground right on the beach and she went up and down the slide a few times before settling down on the sand with a few other kids to do some more scooping.
I jogged back to the house from Venice and met Shane and Jules there just in time to help get her down for her nap.  Once she woke, we were back out the door, in search of a late lunch.  La Verne had recommended ramen from Tsujita, where we snagged a sidewalk table and slurped our bowls of noodles and rich, flavorful broth.
For dessert, we walked around the corner for green tea shaved ice from Blockheads.  So good.  So, so good. My only complaint is that I couldn’t keep Juliette away from it – get your spoon away my mochi, kid!
Bellies full, we played for awhile at Tongva Park, climbing on rocks and bumping down the roller slide.
We weren’t far from the beach, so we headed over to stake out a perfect patch of sand near the pier to catch another sunset. Â But first, more running! Â This video sums it up so clearly – I look away for a mere second, and she’s gone. Â Her pants were soaked faster that I could say “STOP!”.
Keeping this girl from getting swept out to sea was exhausting, but oh, her unbridled joy! Â Completely worth it.
We finally coaxed her up onto the towel to scoop, pat, dump and demolish. Â Sand castles don’t stand a chance with this little one.
One last jog, before heading out…
This might be an appropriate time for me to apologize to Los Angeles – I’d always fiercely claimed that I am not an LA person, that the city is all sprawl and traffic and too-tan women in too-high heels, but I take it back.  That evening, as the waves murmured and the sky blazed orange and Juliette excitedly pointed to the seagulls flying overhead, I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else.
Stay tuned for days 3 and 4!

Valentines Day!  A day for lovers, for romance, for chocolates and wine and ooh-la-la.  Or…a day for chasing after your toddler, finding joy in pink-frosted donuts and a longer-than-normal nap and an afternoon at the park.  C’est la parenthood.
We spent the morning at the Rusts – the kiddos exchanged Valentines (turns out Jules has mad watercolor skills!) and the grown-ups sipped mimosas and munched on Nance’s heart-shaped coffee cake.
Jules enjoyed a little snuggle session with her buddy S in the playroom hammock. Â I don’t know where that girl’s pants went.
We made it home for naptime and Juliette crashed hard, snoozing for a solid hour and a half (this is an improvement over recent sub-hour naps!).  Find me something sweeter than a baby sleeping with her butt up in the air like so.  I dare you.
Juliette woke up in great spirits and laid with us on the couch for a bit, then tore into the magna-doodle I bought her for V-Day.
Once the new toy magic wore off (which took all of…15 minutes? Â damn it.), we all got a little antsy and decided to drive over to Luther Burbank Park to enjoy the sun. Â We hit that playground hard. Â Too hard, as evidenced by my sore butt. Â That turbo-boosted roller slide has an unexpected kick to it!
Once we had explored every slide, swing, and teeter-totter, we made our way toward the water, stopping for a few minutes to check out the pups at the dog park. Â Jules was completely mesmerized, woof-woofing at each dog that ran past her. Â Forget the zoo – this is apparently where it’s at!
Once we pried Juliette away from the furballs, we walked down to the waterfront to throw rocks and see how close we could get to the water’s edge without actually getting our feet soaked (her game, not ours).
I asked for a kiss and…wow. Â This girl doesn’t hold back.
A chill set in as the sun went down, so we trekked back to the car, deciding we should ride this good-spirited wave and go grab a bite somewhere. Â I was in the mood for a burger but raised my eyebrows as Shane threw out the names of a couple of trendy, probably-crowded Capitol Hill burger joints. Â Let’s not press our luck. Â I wanted to go someplace easy and close-by, someplace we knew would have high chairs and crayons. Â And that’s the story of how the Schnells ended up at the Factoria Mall Red Robin for Valentines Day dinner.
Shane and I reminisced over our bottomless fries about the Valentines meal we ate at Windows on the Water in Morro Bay when I was in college, where we ordered our first-ever bottle of wine (a lovely White Zinfandel) and sipped it while the sounds of quietly murmuring couples and piano music filled the dimly lit dining room.  That was fun.  But RED ROBIN.  Red Robin has balloons.
Happy Valentines Day, folks – may you all find happiness in the most unexpected of places.
